our company journey
1990
Journey was started
In 1990, our journey started as a small merchant bank. We restructured the bank into five global businesses — Payment Solutions, Corporate & Investment Banking, Wealth Management & Insurance, Retail & Commercial, and Open Bank— to streamline governance, scale platforms, and accelerate time to market in every country where we operate.
2007
Get rewards 20+
In 2007, we acquired Banco Popular in Spain and Portugal (on the back of its resolution), where we were chosen to take it on and, therefore, boosted our position on the Iberian Peninsula. The resulting entity became Spain’s top bank for loans and deposits.
In parallel, we strengthened our presence in Central Europe by acquiring Deutsche Bank’s retail business through our subsidiary BZ WBK. We also bolstered our position in the Southern Cone with our acquisition of Citibank’s retail business in Argentina.
2000
Launch 100+ product
We kept key services going through a vast network of branches and boosted our digital channels. In addition to payment holidays and other relief measures, in Spain we channelled EUR 100 billion in financing to entrepreneurs and businesses, of which EUR 30.8 billion came in the form of loans backed by Spain’s Official Credit Institute (ICO).
2026
Still on right track
In 2026, we made several strategic moves to bolster our global platform, including the sale of a minority stake in Santander Bank Polska to Erste Group and a partnership to harness both banks’ corporate and investment banking and payments capabilities. Openbank continued to broaden its proposition in Europe by adding a local IBAN and new loan products, as well as launching a cryptocurrency trading and custody service on its investment platform. What’s more, we announced we would join Openbank and Santander Consumer Finance as a single entity to gradually bring our consumer finance businesses in Europe under the Openbank brand (starting with Germany).
